Knife Care

Knife-Store — Damascus Knife Care Guide

Our Damascus steel knives have a high carbon content, giving them a long-lasting, razor-sharp edge. However, the carbon also makes them more susceptible to rust if exposed to moisture. Proper care will keep your knife looking and performing its best for years.

Cleaning

Wash your knife in warm water with any standard dish soap. Dry it immediately using a clean towel. Never leave your knife to air dry, as moisture can quickly cause rust.

Oiling

Once the knife is completely dry, use a cloth or paper towel to apply a thin coat of oil to the blade. We recommend food-safe mineral oil because it is inexpensive, safe for kitchen use, and does not spoil. Cooking oil can be used for short-term protection but may go rancid over time, so it’s not recommended for long storage.

Rust Removal

If rust appears on your knife, don’t worry—it’s easy to fix. Rub the blade with apple cider vinegar or lemon juice, then wash with warm soapy water, dry by hand, and oil the blade as normal. Over time, your knife will develop a patina that naturally helps protect it from moisture.

Storage Tips

Do not store your knife in a leather roll for long periods, as leather can trap moisture against the blade. If you must store it in leather, apply a heavy coat of oil beforehand.

Quick Tips

  • Wash in warm soapy water and dry immediately.
  • Coat the blade with mineral oil before storing.
  • If rust forms, use vinegar or lemon juice to remove it.
  • Avoid long-term leather storage without heavy oiling.
